The Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change officially launched the nation's inaugural PRAMAAN framework on Tuesday afternoon. The newly established domestic certification system creates a formal regulatory structure to verify that timber, bamboo farming, and forest plantations originate exclusively from deforestation-free sourcing channels.
Aligning with Global Supply Chains
The introduction of the framework comes as a direct response to tightening international trade regulations regarding forestry exports. By creating a transparent, government-backed validation process, the policy provides local agroforestry farmers with the necessary documentation to access strict international markets.
"PRAMAAN represents a structural leap forward for India's agroforestry sector," explained Dr Bhupender Yadav, a senior forestry policy consultant advising the implementation task force. "We are establishing a rigorous, nationally accepted verification system that proves our timber resources are cultivated sustainably without degrading existing natural forest boundaries."
Economic Security for Agro-Farmers
The system explicitly separates commercial timber production on private lands from protected state forests. Proponents of the policy point out that clear certification removes bureaucratic hurdles, allowing smallholder farmers to harvest and transport timber with fewer regulatory bottlenecks.
"For years, local planters struggled to prove the legal and ecological origins of their wood harvests to foreign buyers," noted environmental economist Savita Murthy. "This framework provides a direct shield against international supply-chain exclusions whilst actively incentivising private green cover expansion across rural terrain."
