On the afternoon of July 19, 2026, the young Class 7 student of a local Model School lost his life while trying to save his beloved pet puppy from the raging floodwaters in Bamun Pukhuri village, located under the Nazira sub-district of Sivasagar. Hridip was the only child of Deepak and Parbati Panika, a family of daily wage labourers who had already seen their home and all their earthly belongings completely obliterated by the relentless deluge.
The tragedy unfolded rapidly as the overflowing Dikhow River inundated large parts of the tea estate and submerged local households. As the violent floodwaters breached the village and began engulfing their home, Hridip's family rushed in confusion to move to safety. In the panic of evacuation, the family's three-month-old puppy, Borun, was accidentally left behind and caught in the surging currents. Witnessing his pet struggling to stay afloat, Hridip acted entirely on instinct. Without a single thought for his own safety, he plunged directly into the swirling, treacherous waters. While the brave teenager successfully managed to pull the puppy to safety, the sheer force of the powerful undercurrent overpowered him. The fast-moving waters swept the young boy away before his helpless family and onlookers could reach him. Following an intensive and anxious search by local rescuers and authorities, his body was later recovered downstream.
In the aftermath of the disaster, the puppy Borun survived the harrowing ordeal entirely unharmed. He remains with Hridip’s grieving parents as the last living memory of their brave boy. The unbearable grief of the family has touched millions across India after heartbreaking videos and photographs spread widely on social media, showing Deepak and Parbati Panika weeping over the loss of their only son while the rescued puppy sits quietly and faithfully beside a framed photograph of Hridip. The tragic loss prompted an immediate outpouring of community support, with local social workers, citizens, and content creators visiting the family to provide financial aid and emotional support.
The tragic incident has drawn real accounts and statements from those closest to the event.
