Parenting A Pet
Finance & IT professional Rupali Bahadur Mansinghka, who loves to capture life’s essence on canvas, talks about her bonding with her beloved dog…
They say your pets become a reflection of you, or maybe you of them. Their personality gets influenced by yours, and unknowingly, yours by them. There is a soul connection-how else do you explain that they get to know even when you are a kilometre away?
There is a jumpiness in their behaviour when you call from another city. I never believed this until I experienced it myself. It is the same case with my little girl, affectionately named June (as she was born that month). We have been inseparable since she came into our family five years ago. I still remember the day we went to bring her home. She came running to us, as if she chose us to be hers forever. Since that day, it has been a wonderful journey, full of laughter, excitement and joy. It seems she came into our lives to complete our family. She is a companion, an accomplice, a confidante, a friend who is always there to cheer me up.
She has been a bundle of joy from the time she came in, nudging me to always play with her, seeking to get attention even when I was drowned in work or thoughts and forgot to take a break. She reminds me of being myself, of that child in me who sometimes feels lost in adulthood. Despite my most hectic day, I will burst into a smile when she runs away with my socks, expecting me to come after her. It is her way of saying, “I really like you and want to play with you”.
Pets make you their world, waiting for you patiently when you go out to work. They make the home a welcoming place, where you come back to find that unconditional love and cheer. It is such a joy to watch them with their puppy eyes, getting whatever they want from you - whether it is a piece of papaya or that treat they want. My little June is no different. She will be the most obedient bundle of joy when it comes to getting a treat, or more specifically, chicken jerky (the “special treat”), which is a delicacy for her.
It is as if they know you inside out: your emotions, feelings, and the things that trouble you sometimes. She will come and just lie beside me, comforting me as if saying, “Do not worry, I am there”. Sometimes, I wonder how she knows me so well, how she pulls me to play when I need a break, lies in silence when I am unwell and runs around me when we are going out without any prior indication. I think that is what a bond with these angels from heaven does. They are here to make our world a better place to live in. I hope you find an angel for yourself. Happy living!
