Massive European coalition demands total freeze on environmental deregulation

A historic petition signed by 1,254,722 citizens across European Union member states has been officially delivered to the European Commissioner for the Environment, Jessika Roswall. The handover occurred outside the European Commission headquarters in Brussels at the Schuman roundabout on October 23, 2026. Organised by the #HandsOffNature coalition—which includes BirdLife Europe, ClientEarth, the European Environmental Bureau, and WWF EU—the movement represents a direct public ultimatum against recent administrative pushes to dilute foundational conservation laws.

Public resistance to the simplification agenda

The massive public mobilisation emerged in response to the European Commission's introduction of the Environmental Omnibus package, which proposed new frameworks to accelerate environmental checks on industrial developments. Conservation leaders argue that these measures, framed by political bodies as administrative simplification and the cutting of red tape, operate as a veiled dismantling of critical protections. The petition explicitly demands that the European Commission abandon its planned structural revisions of the Birds and Habitats Directives as well as the Water Framework Directive.

To visually demonstrate the scale of public concern during the handover, organisers installed a three-metre metal tree on the square, with individual messages from signatories engraved onto its leaves. The collective warning comes at a critical time, as field data indicates that over 80 per cent of European habitats currently remain in poor ecological condition.

Demands for enforcement over revision

During an implementation dialogue held with Commissioner Roswall on the morning of October 23, 2026, representatives from more than 230 supporting organisations argued that legislative rollbacks threaten clean drinking water, public health, and localised climate stability. The coalition emphasised that the focus of European governance must pivot away from rewriting established statutes and toward providing adequate staffing, funding, and clearer guidance for national enforcement authorities.

The #HandsOffNature coalition released an official statement stressing that citizens demand robust enforcement of existing protections rather than the weakening of vital environmental laws, with full details available in the referenced sources.

Editor's Note
The massive petition underscores a growing divide between public conservation demands and industrial deregulation efforts. The European Commission must view current environmental directives as essential baselines, prioritising stronger regional enforcement over administrative rollbacks that compromise biodiversity.
