India and the European Union have signed a historic Letter of Intent to establish the India–EU Green Shipping Corridor Coalition during the prestigious Sagarmanthan 2026: The Great Oceans Dialogue summit in New Delhi. The bilateral climate infrastructure agreement, finalised on October 9, 2026, marks a massive structural transition towards zero-emission global maritime pathways, aiming to link India's expanding domestic green hydrogen and sustainable fuel production capacities directly with Europe's rising demand for clean marine supply chains.

The framework focuses on decarbonising major trade routes across the Indian Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea by deploying specialised dual-fuel container vessels and setting up low-carbon bunkering hubs at strategic maritime terminals. Moving away from heavy fuel oil, both regions will co-invest in port infrastructure modifications to handle zero-emission alternative carriers like green ammonia and e-methanol. Industry representatives at the summit stated that the maritime sector contributes roughly three per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions, making targeted cross-border trade corridors an absolute necessity to hit international net-zero targets.

Bilateral trade officials at the summit noted that this strategic coalition will significantly lower supply chain emissions whilst de-risking commercial investments in experimental green fuel technology. Speaking at the signing ceremony, maritime policy experts emphasised that creating these corridors provides a predictable market pathway for alternative energy producers. The agreement mandates the immediate formation of a joint task force consisting of shipping executives, port operators, and environmental regulators to formalise safety standards and bunkering protocols across the designated trade routes by the next calendar year.

Editor's Note
This ambitious maritime pact signals a crucial shift from abstract global carbon reduction pledges to concrete, cross-continental engineering execution. As global manufacturing supply chains face stricter environmental tracking, developing emission-free oceanic corridors offers a viable way forward to maintain international trade volumes without compromising planetary boundaries. To ensure success, both India and the European Union must now accelerate matching domestic infrastructure expansions, ensuring that green fuel production volume scales rapidly enough to meet the operational demands of next-generation commercial fleets.
