If a tea bag feels unnaturally smooth, slippery, or cannot be easily torn apart by hand, do not bury or compost the bag whole. Doing so introduces permanent microplastic pollution into your food chain and can harm small earthworms. Always cut the bag open with scissors, discard the outer mesh in the trash, and use only the loose, organic leaves inside.

A surprising number of premium tea brands still secure their tags using tiny metal staples and synthetic polyester strings. Metal staples do not decompose easily and can pose physical puncture hazards to earthworms. More importantly, loose staples and plastic strings can be accidentally swallowed by curious pets like puppies or kittens exploring the garden beds. Take a moment to systematically strip away all metal staples, paper tags, and strings before introducing any material to your compost bin or topsoil. Because tea leaves naturally contain tannic acid, their regular application will slightly lower the surrounding soil pH over time, tilting it toward an acidic state. This is an incredible advantage for acid-loving flora like roses, ferns, hydrangeas, gardenias, and blueberries. However, it must be used very sparingly around plants that prefer neutral to alkaline soils, such as lavender, lilacs, clematis, and various Mediterranean herbs. Always check your specific plant profiles before top-dressing with loose tea.
