Female leopard caught, relocated

A young female leopard was safely trapped in Devanpura village under the Kakraha Range of the Katarniaghat Wildlife Division in Bahraich on August 1. The healthy female leopard, aged approximately 2 to 3 years, was caught by the forest department after continuous reports of the big cat entering the village and preying on goats and livestock. Following a medical examination that found it uninjured and active, it was released back into its natural habitat following National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) guidelines. Following the capture of the female leopard in Devanpura village, Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Apoorv Dixit issued an official statement: "Villagers must stay alert and report any wild animal sightings to the nearest forest outpost. Residents should avoid approaching or confronting wildlife to reduce risk to both people and animals." As multiple leopards have been active across Uttar Pradesh's sugarcane fields and forest fringes recently, other local forest officials have added similar warnings for village safety. Regional Forest Officer Sunil Kumar Rao strongly advised, "Villagers should not go into their fields or the forest area alone, and immediately inform the forest department if they spot any wildlife activity in the area." Former Bahraich DFO Sundaresha appealed to residents "not to panic or attempt to confront the animal if it is spotted again." Foresters emphasise that crowds attempting to chase leopards often trigger defensive, aggressive attacks. Animal activists and wildlife groups are not criticising the capture of this specific female leopard. As the operation was handled strictly as a non-lethal, preventative rescue, it has avoided the typical controversy associated with human-wildlife conflicts. Reports said that the 2- to 3-year-old female was captured without suffering any external injuries or physical stress. Activists typically only intervene if an animal is beaten, handled aggressively or poorly treated during transit. Rather than placing the big cat into a permanent zoo or rescue facility—a practice wildlife conservationists strongly oppose—the Uttar Pradesh Forest Department immediately arranged her relocation back into her natural deep forest habitat. The process fully adhered to standard operating procedures and National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) guidelines. Proper administrative permissions were secured beforehand, ensuring the capture was legally sound and ecologically justified to mitigate escalating livestock conflict.

Strengthening capacity for sustainable waste mgmt

A state-level workshop on Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) and the Solid Waste Management (SWM) Rules, 2026 was successfully conducted with the participation of government officials, technical experts, Divisional DPMs, Urban Local Body representatives, and industry stakeholders. The workshop featured expert-led technical sessions on the legal framework of EPR, Plastic Waste Management Rules, EPR registration and compliance mechanisms, implementation challenges, and the provisions of the SWM Rules, 2026, with a special focus on Bulk Waste Generators. The interactive discussions provided a valuable platform for knowledge sharing, collaboration, and strengthening institutional capacity for effective implementation. The workshop concluded with a valedictory address by Assistant Director Satypal, highlighting key takeaways and reaffirming the commitment towards sustainable plastic waste management and scientific solid waste management practices across the State.

Delhi HC for pilot stray dog sterilisation & vaccination camps

In a major step toward addressing the stray dog issue humanely, the Delhi High Court has directed the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) to set up pilot camps for the sterilisation and anti-rabies vaccination of stray dogs in one ward under each civic body. The division bench issued these directions on August 5, 2026, highlighting a community-driven, collaborative approach to animal welfare and public safety. The initiative will be closely monitored and executed in coordination with the court-appointed amicus curiae. The High Court explicitly clarified that no stray dogs are to be forcibly captured, dragged away, or permanently relocated to shelters. Instead, residents and animal feeders will be actively encouraged to voluntarily bring stray dogs from their neighbourhoods to the designated camps. To ensure maximum public involvement, the civic bodies must widely publicise the location and schedule of these camps using local banners, signboards, and widespread awareness drives. This pilot project will initially target one specific ward under MCD jurisdiction and one under NDMC jurisdiction to assess operational efficiency before a larger rollout is planned across the city. Animal welfare advocates have welcomed the decision, calling it a progressive victory for animal rights. Activists note that forcible relocation only increases territorial aggression and leaves areas open to unsterilised dogs, whereas involving local feeders who already have the trust of these dogs ensures a stress-free and highly effective vaccination drive. On the other hand, Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) expressed measured optimism blended with caution. Representatives from South Delhi noted that while a structured vaccination and sterilisation drive is exactly what Delhi needs, relying solely on voluntary participation might slow down the process in areas where stray dog conflicts are severely high. They emphasised that civic authorities must provide strict oversight so that aggressive packs are handled safely as the civic bodies finalise the selected wards and announce the schedule for the pilot camps in the coming weeks.
