Selfless Souls

Mamta S Dubey is principal chief conservator of forests (PCCF), Lucknow UP

Q: Why did you think of becoming a forest officer?

I graduated with Botany as my subject. My interest in plant world goes back to my childhood days. So, I decided to join forest service as my profession. This service has given me great opportunity for conservation of natural resources, forest management wildlife management etc. as well as man management. Also experiencing forests at close quarters is a magical experience.

Q: What is the role of social forestry in wildlife conservation?

Social forestry by definition means practising forestry outside traditional forest areas. Social forestry leads to planting management and harvesting of timber and other products without affecting forest areas. This results in minimal disturbance to forest areas and animal habitats are preserved. Also, tree crops outside forests provide healthy habitats for avifauna.

Q: What as per you is the best approach to manage  the forest cover we presently have?

The best approach to manage the forest cover is to adopt scientific management of traditional forest areas, raising of multi-species plantations on farmlands and other available lands.

Q: What is the concept of forest utilisation? Do you think it can come in the way of wildlife conservation? If so, what are the ways to mitigate the possibility?

The concept of forest utilisation simply means living life in harmony with nature. Using natural products from forests. It will not come in the way of wildlife conservation if the utilisation is done in a sustainable manner.

Q: What is the most challenging assignment you had to tackle?

All my assignments have been challenging and satisfying at the same time.

Q: What was your experience as the chief vigilance officer of IRCON?

As the Chief Vigilance Officer of IRCON I learnt a lot about engineering projects and also the conflict issues being faced by forest conservation needs and developmental needs.

The desire and determination to conquer the toughest situation keeps me motivated.
