Environmental advocates and conservation groups are raising serious concerns over the selection of the Jio World Convention Centre as the host venue for the upcoming Earthshot Prize awards ceremony scheduled for November 17, 2026. The controversy stems from a perceived conflict between the prestigious environmental award's core values and the broader commercial practices of the venue's parent conglomerate, Reliance Industries, particularly regarding fossil fuel investments and large-scale wildlife captivity.
The Earthshot Prize, founded by Prince William to incentivise solutions to the world’s greatest environmental challenges, is making its debut in India this year. However, the choice of venue has drawn sharp criticism from local and international activists who argue that staging a climate-focused event at a facility owned by India's largest oil-refining corporation undermines the spirit of the initiative. Environmentalists argue that such platforms risk greenwashing corporate reputations unless strict vetting is applied to commercial partners.
Dr Ramesh Sharma, a senior sustainability analyst at the Centre for Environmental Action in Mumbai, analysed the situation directly. "Organising a global summit designed to repair our planet at a venue funded directly by petrochemical extraction sends a deeply contradictory message," Dr Sharma stated. "If the Earthshot Prize aims to inspire true ecological transformation, its leadership must apply rigorous environmental screening to its operational partnerships and venues, rather than prioritising large infrastructure."
Adding to the friction are growing concerns from wildlife advocates regarding the conglomerate's mega-zoo project, Radhe Krishna Temple Elephant Welfare Trust and the Greens Zoological Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre in Jamnagar, Gujarat. Activists argue that the international transfer of exotic animals to a private corporate facility conflicts with the prize's emphasis on natural biodiversity protection and habitat preservation.
Defending the logistical arrangements, an official representative from the local organising committee, speaking on the condition of anonymity, remarked, "The Jio World Convention Centre was chosen strictly based on its capacity to safely host over 2,000 international delegates, heads of state, and media personnel. While we acknowledge the concerns raised by advocacy groups, our primary focus remains on leveraging this global platform to highlight breakthrough ecological innovations from the Global South."
Representatives from the Earthshot Prize council have noted that the event itself will adhere to strict sustainability protocols, including a zero-waste policy and a fully plant-based menu for all attendees. However, campaigners maintain that these micro-level adjustments do not offset the macro-environmental impact of the venue's primary backers, fossil fuel operations, and wildlife management policies.
Editor's Note
The growing friction surrounding the Earthshot venue underscores a critical challenge in modern climate diplomacy: the institutional reliance on corporate infrastructure funded by carbon-intensive industries. Moving forward, global environmental organisations must establish transparent, ethically aligned procurement standards for host locations. True ecological advocacy requires systemic consistency, ensuring that the platforms celebrating green solutions are not financed by the very entities driving environmental degradation.
