Farewell, Sonakali… The Braveheart of Corbett, an Immortal Story of Courage!

Lion HN Singh

The legendary elephant Sonakali, approximately 80 years old, breathed her last at around 10:45 PM on October 17,  2026, at Corbett Tiger Reserve. She was given a dignified farewell with full state honours.

Sonakali’s departure is not merely the loss of an elephant; it marks the end of a glorious chapter in the history of Corbett’s forests. Her courage, dedicated service, and invaluable contribution to wildlife conservation will always be remembered.

During my several visits to Jim Corbett National Park, I had the privilege of meeting Sonakali personally. Those encounters gave me a deeper appreciation of the remarkable bond between humans and animals and the vital role elephants play in forest conservation. Her presence and her inspiring legacy will remain close to my heart.

Remarkable Stories of Sonakali’s Courage

2011 Rescue Operation at Garjia

Sonakali played a significant role in the rescue operation involving a man-eating tiger in the Garjia area. Her bravery and contribution made her a familiar and respected name in Corbett’s conservation history.

2012  A Daring Mission in Sarpduli Range

In one of her most challenging missions, Sonakali helped retrieve the body of Diwani Ram, who had lost his life in a tiger attack. The operation demonstrated her extraordinary courage, patience, and remarkable ability to assist forest personnel in dangerous situations.

A Trusted Companion in Patrols and Rescue Operations

Sonakali made invaluable contributions to tiger rescue missions and forest patrols. On several occasions, she helped protect other elephants and grass-cutting workers, proving to be a dependable partner for forest officials during difficult and risky operations.

Sonakali Was More Than Just an Elephant…

She was a trusted companion of the Forest Department, a courageous partner in tackling human-wildlife conflict, and an irreplaceable part of Corbett’s natural heritage.

Her life reminds us that animals are not merely part of our natural world; they are also our partners in protecting it. Their contribution to conservation deserves our deepest respect, gratitude, and compassion.

Though Sonakali is no longer with us, her stories of bravery and years of dedicated service will continue to inspire generations.

A heartfelt tribute to Sonakali!

You received a farewell with full state honours, but your true honour lies in the memories of those who knew you, the forests you served, and the countless hearts you touched.

Rest in peace, Sonakali. Your legacy will live forever in the forests of Corbett.
