Parenting A Pet

Nagesh Bhargava and his family dote on this little bundle of joy

Taking care of a little pet is equal to, or nothing less than, taking up the responsibility of a human baby. We never had a pet all our lives, so we did not really know what kind of responsibilities came along with these little creatures. But as soon as we saw Laila with her beautiful eyes, we fell in love with her! It was as if in a moment we knew that she was our family and we couldn't wait to bring her home.

We brought Laila home when she was just a three-month-old pup. We did not know how to feed her, or what all would be included in her diet and the biggest question was, would she be comfortable with us?

It has been almost a year since this "homecoming ceremony" of Laila’s and we couldn't be happier with our decision to bring her into our lives. She wakes up before us and has made it a ritual to wake me up before the alarm even goes off. Then she runs off to join her mom while she does her everyday chores. Then she goes for her morning walk and scares away dogs that are many times bigger than her, like  a Rottweiler. She barks at anyone who tries to talk to us (trying to show how protective and brave she is).

Laila is a little bundle of joy in our lives. Mornings seem dull when she decides to snooze for more than her daily hours of sleep. She has completed us as a family now. There is never a dull moment with her and she did light up our lives with her crazy antics and over-the-top mischief! Of course, parenting a pet and parenting a child are two very different things but at the end, it is the emotions that are attached to raising a kid that gets us through all tough times!
