They are the most affected by lockdown

For a budding law practitioner Allankrita Sarkar, feeding strays is as important as breathing

The period of lockdown has is hurting the strays the maximum. With extensions in the lockdown phases, the animals on the roads have been left hungry and thirsty. The eateries and restaurants are all closed. Those residing near them and depending on the crumbs and leftovers for their survival are suffering the most. Due to lack of food they are starving and can often be found crying with hunger at nights.

As soon as the news of lockdown broke, everyone rushed to get their stocks filled. But, did anyone give a thought to these hungry voiceless souls? Did anyone think who was going to provide food for them? How many of us even gave them a fleeting thought? No one, because each of us was worried about personal comfort and safety! When I heard about the lockdown, the first thing that came to my mind was how the mongrels will get their food! How are they going to live without the leftovers from dhabas and small eateries/stalls that was their only option for survival? I have been feeding my community dogs for years. But the day I got to know about the lockdown, I decided to cover more areas to feed the dogs around me.  The very first day I fed 30+ dogs. I kept increasing my area and now I am feeding around 60+dogs everyday. I give them rice and dog food which consists of 20kg rice being cooked by me everyday.

The happiness and contentment I feel when I see them gobbling up the food due to hunger are heartening and provide me the impetus to do better. There are so many dogs that are so thirsty that they become happy seeing a mere bowl of water! The gleam of happiness in their eyes when they know that you have come to feed them is priceless. Everyone is taking precautions because of corona. But I realized that somebody had to move out to feed them. I decided to be that somebody while taking full precautions for myself too. I hope more people find the ‘heart’ to feed these strays as their survival can bed difficult without human help.
